__________________________________________________________ The U.S. Department of Energy Computer Incident Advisory Capability ___ __ __ _ ___ / | /_\ / \___ __|__ / \ \___ __________________________________________________________ INFORMATION BULLETIN GNOME VFS "extfs" Vulnerability [Red Hat Security Advisory: RHSA-2004:373-13] August 4, 2004 19:00 GMT Number O-194 ______________________________________________________________________________ PROBLEM: GNOME VFS is the GNOME virtual file system. The "extfs" backends make it possible to implement file systems using scripts. Flaws have been found in these scripts. PLATFORM: Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS, ES, and WS v.2.1 Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS, ES, and WS v.3 DAMAGE: An attacker who successfully enticed a user to open a specially-craft URI using gnome-vfs could perform actions as that user. SOLUTION: Install appropriate updated vendor packages. ______________________________________________________________________________ VULNERABILITY The risk is LOW. These flaws do not appear to be easily ASSESSMENT: exploitable. Users need to be enticed to perform a specific action in order to install a link needed for the exploit onto the user's system. There are no indications of privilege escalation capabilities. ______________________________________________________________________________ LINKS: CIAC BULLETIN: http://www.ciac.org/ciac/bulletins/o-194.shtml ORIGINAL BULLETIN: https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2004-373.html CVE/CAN: http://www.cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name= CAN-2004-0494 ______________________________________________________________________________ [***** Start Red Hat Security Advisory: RHSA-2004:373-13 *****] GNOME VFS updates address extfs vulnerability Advisory: RHSA-2004:373-13 Last updated on: 2004-08-04 Affected Products: Red Hat Desktop (v. 3) Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS (v. 2.1) Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS (v. 3) Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES (v. 2.1) Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES (v. 3) Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS (v. 2.1) Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS (v. 3) Red Hat Linux Advanced Workstation 2.1 for the Itanium Processor CVEs (cve.mitre.org): CAN-2004-0494 Security Advisory Details: Updated GNOME VFS packages that remove potential extfs-related vulnerabilities are now available. GNOME VFS is the GNOME virtual file system. It provides a modular architecture and ships with several modules that implement support for file systems, HTTP, FTP, and others. The extfs backends make it possible to implement file systems for GNOME VFS using scripts. Flaws have been found in several of the GNOME VFS extfs backend scripts. Red Hat Enterprise Linux ships with vulnerable scripts, but they are not used by default. An attacker who is able to influence a user to open a specially-crafted URI using gnome-vfs could perform actions as that user. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CAN-2004-0494 to this issue. Users of Red Hat Enterprise Linux should upgrade to these updated packages, which remove these unused scripts.
