__________________________________________________________ The U.S. Department of Energy Computer Incident Advisory Capability ___ __ __ _ ___ / | /_\ / \___ __|__ / \ \___ __________________________________________________________ INFORMATION BULLETIN "iptables" Packages Updated [Debian Security Advisory: DSA 580-1] November 1, 2004 21:00 GMT Number P-026 ______________________________________________________________________________ PROBLEM: The iptables command did not always load the required modules. This could lead to firewall rules not being loaded. PLATFORM: - Machines running the stable distribution (woody) prior to version 1.2.6a-5.0woody2. - Machines running the unstable distribution (sid) prior to version 1.2.11-4. DAMAGE: The unloaded firewall rules may expose the machine's or network's vulnerabilities to remote attackers. SOLUTION: Update with the latest iptables packages in the latest distributions. ______________________________________________________________________________ VULNERABILITY The risk is MEDIUM. Best practices would have exposed this ASSESSMENT: problem early by testing the firewall rules shortly after installation and before putting a lot of reliance on the installation. The early exposure of this problem could allow the problem to be addressed in other ways. Using the latest distributions would replace the use of workarounds. ______________________________________________________________________________ LINKS: CIAC BULLETIN: http://www.ciac.org/ciac/bulletins/p-026.shtml ORIGINAL BULLETIN: http://www.debian.org/security/2004/dsa-580 CVE/CAN: http://www.cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name= CAN-2004-0986 ______________________________________________________________________________ [***** Start Debian Security Advisory: DSA 580-1 *****] Debian Security Advisory DSA-580-1 iptables -- missing initialisation Date Reported: 01 Nov 2004 Affected Packages: iptables Vulnerable: Yes Security database references: In the Debian bugtracking system: Bug 219686. In Mitre's CVE dictionary: CAN-2004-0986. More information: Faheem Mitha noticed that the iptables command, an administration tool for IPv4 packet filtering and NAT, did not always load the required modules on its own as it was supposed to. This could lead to firewall rules not being loaded on system startup. This caused a failure in connection with rules provided by lokkit at least. For the stable distribution (woody) this problem has been fixed in version 1.2.6a-5.0woody2. For the unstable distribution (sid) this problem has been fixed in version 1.2.11-4. We recommend that you upgrade your iptables package.
