Local exploitation of a file overwrite vulnerability in the gr_osview command could allow for the overwriting of arbitrary files, regardless of permissions. PLATFORM: IRIX 6.5.21m IRIX 6.5.21f IRIX 6.5.22 IRIX 6.5.23 IRIX 6.5.24 IRIX 6.5.25 IRIX 6.5.26 IRIX 6.5.27 DAMAGE: After execution of the gr_osview command, a local user could overwrite or read arbitrary files, causing system failure or disclosure of sensitive information. SOLUTION: Install the security patches. ______________________________________________________________________________ VULNERABILITY The risk is LOW. A local user can obtain potentially sensitive ASSESSMENT: information from files and can overwrite arbitrary files on the target system. ______________________________________________________________________________ LINKS: CIAC BULLETIN: http://www.ciac.org/ciac/bulletins/p-172.shtml ORIGINAL BULLETIN: http://www.sgi.com/support/security/advisories.html ADDITIONAL LINKS: Security Tracker: http://securitytracker.com/alerts/2005/Apr/1013662.html IDEFENSE: http://www.idefense.com/application/poi/display?id=225&type=vulnerabilities CVE/CAN: http://www.cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CAN-2005-0465 http://www.cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CAN-2005-0464 ______________________________________________________________________________ [***** Start SGI Security Advisory 20050402-01-P *****] ______________________________________________________________________________ SGI Security Advisory Title: gr_osview vulnerabilities Number: 20050402-01-P Date: April 7, 2005 Reference: SGI BUG 930890, CAN-2005-0465, IDEF0820 Reference: SGI BUG 930892, CAN-2005-0464, IDEF0821 Fixed in: Patch 5869 for IRIX 6.5.23-6.5.27 ______________________________________________________________________________ SGI provides this information freely to the SGI user community for its consideration, interpretation, implementation and use. The bugs addressed by this patch are: * 930890 gr_osview -s can corrupt arbitrary files http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CAN-2005-0465 http://www.idefense.com/application/poi/display?id=225&type=vulnerabilities * 930892 can display head of arbitrary files http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CAN-2005-0464 http://www.idefense.com/application/poi/display?id=226&type=vulnerabilities SGI has investigated the issue and recommends the following steps for resolving this issue. It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that these measures be implemented on ALL vulnerable SGI systems. -------------- --- Impact --- -------------- To determine the version of IRIX you are running, execute the following command: # /bin/uname -R That will return a result similar to the following: # 6.5 6.5.19f The first number ("6.5") is the release name, the second ("6.5.19f" in this case) is the extended release name. The extended release name is the "version" we refer to throughout this document. ---------------- --- Solution --- ---------------- SGI has provided a series of patches for these vulnerabilities and recommends that all affected operating systems install the appropriate patch.
