PLATFORM: Red Hat Desktop (v. 3 ) & (v. 4) Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS, ES, WS (v. 3) & (v. 4) SGI ProPack 3 Service Pack 5 for SGI Altix family of systems Debian GNU/Linux 3.0 (woody) DAMAGE: It is possible for an attacker to create a file with a carefully crafted name which, when the file is opened, executes arbitrary instructions on a victim's machine. SOLUTION: Upgrade to the appropriate version. ______________________________________________________________________________ VULNERABILITY The risk is MEDIUM. Although it is unlikely that a user would ASSESSMENT: manually open a file with such a carefully crafted file name, a user could, for example, be tricked into opening such a file from within an email client. ______________________________________________________________________________ LINKS: CIAC BULLETIN: http://www.ciac.org/ciac/bulletins/p-218.shtml ORIGINAL BULLETIN: Red Hat RHSA-2005:499-05 https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2005-499.html ADDITIONAL LINKS: SGI Security Advisory Number 20050603-01-U ftp://patches.sgi.com/support/free/security/advisories/ 20050603-01-U.asc Debian Security Advisory DSA-753 http://www.debian.org/security/2005/dsa-753 CVE/CAN: http://www.cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name= CAN-2005-1686 ______________________________________________________________________________ 06/23/2005 - added link to SGI Advanced Linux Environment security update #40, Number: 20050603-01-U that provides patches for SGI ProPack 3 Service Pack 5 for SGI Altix family of systems. 07/12/2005 - added link to Debian Security Advisory DSA 753 that provides updated gedit packages. This update has been rated as having moderate security impact by the Red Hat Security Response Team gEdit is a small text editor designed specifically for the GNOME GUI desktop. A file name format string vulnerability has been discovered in gEdit. It is possible for an attacker to create a file with a carefully crafted name which, when the file is opened, executes arbitrary instructions on a victim's machine. Although it is unlikely that a user would manually open a file with such a carefully crafted file name, a user could, for example, be tricked into opening such a file from within an email client. The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) has assigned the name CAN-2005-1686 to this issue. Users of gEdit should upgrade to this updated package, which contains a backported patch to correct this issue. Solution Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata relevant to your system have been applied. This update is available via Red Hat Network. To use Red Hat Network, launch the Red Hat Update Agent with the following command: up2date This will start an interactive process that will result in the appropriate RPMs being upgraded on your system.
