Ranum mjr@iwi.com Networking and Security Consultant 3018 Guilford Avenue Baltimore, MD 21218 Phone: 410-889-8569 Marcus Ranum has been active in the UNIX networking and security community for the last 14 years, designing, developing, and deploying networking and security applications. As a consultant at Digital Equipment Corporation in 1990-1992 he designed and implemented the DEC SEAL Internet Firewall product, and managed its deployment at customer sites worldwide. At Trusted Information Systems, Inc., as senior scientist and development manager for Internet security products, Marcus designed and implemented the TIS Internet Firewall Toolkit under a grant from ARPA on behalf of the Executive Office of The President of the United States, and configured and managed whitehouse.gov for its first year of operation. The Firewall Toolkit has become the de facto standard Internet firewall software, deployed by over 3,000 sites. Over a dozen products currently on the market are based on the toolkit technology licensed from TIS. Marcus architected and managed the implementation of the TIS Gauntlet Internet Firewall product, and acted as a senior consultant and trainer for managing reseller relationships and training reseller marketing and technical staff. Marcus is a frequent speaker at conferences, and teaches a number of technical tutorials for USENIX and SANS on diverse topics such as firewalls, UNIX internals, security policies and risk assessment, UNIX system and network performance tuning, and UNIX application design. Network Security and Firewall Training and Consulting ----------------------------------------------------- Customized consultation and training is available on a complete range of network security and firewalls related topics. Training is available through periodic presentations at conferences or scheduled presentations through network service providers. On-site tutorials or roundtable discussions are available at your facility upon request. Roundtable discussions and consultation can be tailored to meet your needs, including: . Risk assessment . Needs analysis . Security and acceptable use policies and procedures . Host based security for UNIX systems . Access control security for dial-in or mobile computing . Firewall analysis, penetration testing, or design review . TIS Internet Firewall Toolkit installation verification If desired, complete network security practices consulting is available, including examination of existing policies and practices, and recommendation of prioritized countermeasures for securing your network and maintaining its security as it grows and evolves. Firewall Integration and Customization -------------------------------------- Many organizations installing Internet firewalls require additional support or customizations for specialized applications. Support is available to help you meet your business goals, or to provide additional services or integration with commercial firewalls. Expert consulting is available for design review, implementation, or deployment of all advanced computer security systems, including protocol analysis and development, design review, market analysis, and implementation. Incident Analysis and Assessment -------------------------------- On-site or network-based assistance is available to sites that have suffered a security breach, to identify and contain damage caused by intruders. Effective countermeasures can be identified and deployed to help prevent future penetrations. -------- From academic-firewalls-owner@net.tamu.edu Fri Aug 18 16:27:27 1995 Organization: Information Works! We are currently completing the primary installation phase of our campus ethernet (2,200+ connections) and experiencing quite a few other changes to our technology environment, including significant growth in remote access (Internet and dial-up), replacement of our primary administrative systems with new client-server apps., addition of distributed Unix machines, etc. While contemplating the possible steps one might take to secure this dynamic environment, we thought it might be a good idea to get an independent perspective. Consequently, I am interested in getting names and other information on individuals who might be available to consult on such an undertaking. We are particularly interested in someone who has experience in information security in a higher education or government setting, who has practical as well as theoretical knowledge, and who has previously evaluated and/or made decisions regarding security policy, design and implementation.
