This is the file GUTINDEX.01. It contains etexts published by Project Gutenberg in 2001. Last updated: 22 Oct 2003. See the file GUTINDEX.ALL for all Project Gutenberg etexts. NOTE: GUTINDEX eBook Numbers Now Five Digits! On 24 Jun 2003, we posted our first eBook with a five digit eBook number (#10701). To accomodate this change, we have made an adjustment to the listings: the alignment of eBook numbers less than 10,000 have been moved one space to the right. -- How to use this file: Project Gutenberg eBooks are assigned unique base filenames, usually 5 characters. Each file also has a version number, and a file extension. The files are arranged by the year they were released. For example, consider Alice in Wonderland: Jan 1991 Alice in Wonderland, Lewis Carroll [Carroll #1] [alicexxx.xxx] 11 The line indicates the following: 1. The eBook was released in January, 1991 2. The eBook's name and author are "Alice in Wonderland" by "Lewis Carroll" 3. This is #1 in a series of books by the author 4. The base filename is "alice" 5. The eBook was #11 for Project Gutenberg To find this book, look for files in the etext91 directory (for 1991) starting with "alice". - Files ending in .txt are ASCII text, and are viewable with nearly any file viewer, including a Web browser. Files ending in .tex are mainly technical writings, and should not be confused with plain text files. - Files ending in .htm are HTML files, which contain markup codes for a Web browser. The above represent most of the files available in the Project Gutenberg collection. - Other file extensions will indicate other file formats, some requiring special viewers: .prc are formatted for viewing on a hand-held reader (Mobipocket); .lit files require the Microsoft Reader or compatible viewer; .xml are Extensible Markup Language files, and require a web browser to view (support files are included in the .zip version); music files include .mp3, .wav, and .mid; .mus are musical scores in Finale format; MusicXML are .xml files; files ending in .pdf are Adobe Acrobat files and require the Adobe Acrobat reader. - Other methods may also be used to identify a filetype by adding a letter to the filename after the edition number; for example, "h" for HTML, "u" for Unicode, "r" for Rich Text Format (RTF), "p" for PDF, etc. - Files ending in .zip are compressed using the Zip method. This saves space. Nearly all Project Gutenberg files are available in a .zip version; often, they include images or support files. A "?" at the beginning of the filename indicates that the eBook is available in both 7- & 8- bit versions. If an eBook is available with both 7 and 8 as the first letter in the filename, the 7 indicates a file with only plain 7-bit ASCII. The 8 is for a version with an extended character set, often Latin 1 (also known as ISO8859_1), which includes a set of accented characters and special symbols. For non-English eBooks, an 8-bit character set is often used. Most computers can display the 8-bit character set, but the 7-bit is included for those that cannot, as well as for computerized voice rendering programs and similar. A "1" or "2" for the same eBook number usually indicates a multi-volume set, as in 7wml1xxx.xxx and 7wml2xxx.xxx. A note about our audio eBooks: entries with titles beginnining with "Audio:" (without the quotes), and indicated as .mp3 files in the filename, are Computer-generated audio eBooks, and are comprised of multiple .mp3 files, and have corresponding *index.html and *readme.txt files. Corrected EDITIONS of our eBooks get a new edition NUMBER, xxxxx11.txt, and prior to 1998, occasionally a new eBook number. VERSIONS based on separate sources get new LETTER, xxxxx10a.txt, as well as a new eBook number. New EDITIONS are kept in the same directory as their predecessors, but new VERSIONS are put in the directory corresponding to their release year. In both cases, old files are usually kept. When a very small number of corrections are made a new edition might not be created, but a "Most recently updated" line is added to the file. We try to annotate the individual listings if they don't conform to the above methodologies. For more information about file formats, Zip programs, file viewers, and other topics, visit the official Project Gutenberg Web page at http://www.gutenberg.net At http://www.gutenberg.net, you can also find a searchable index of all Project Gutenberg eBooks. You can search by author, title, language, etc. and be brought directly to the eBook file. In many cases, this is much easier than using the GUTINDEX files! --"INSTANT" ACCESS TO EBOOKS Use your Web browser or FTP program to visit our master download site (or a mirror) if you know the filename you want. Try: http://ibiblio.org/gutenberg/ or ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/docs/books/gutenberg/ . . .navigate to the appropriate directory, and look for the first five letters of the filesname. *****A "C" Following a Project Gutenberg eBook Number Indicates Copyright**** *****A "*" Following a Project Gutenberg eBook Number Indicates Reserved **** Mon Year Title and Author [filename.ext]##### Dec 2001 A L'Ombre Des Jeunes Filles en Fleurs V3 by Proust[3lombxxx.xxx] 3000 Dec 2001 A L'Ombre Des Jeunes Filles en Fleurs V2 by Proust[2lombxxx.xxx] 2999 Dec 2001 A L'Ombre Des Jeunes Filles en Fleurs V1 by Proust[1lombxxx.xxx] 2998 [Author: Marcel Proust] [Language: French] Dec 2001 Time's Laughingstocks, et. al., by Thomas Hardy 12[tmslsxxx.xxx] 2997 [Title: Time's Laughingstocks and Other Verses] Dec 2001 The Romantic Adventures of a Milkmaid, by Hardy 11[rmadvxxx.xxx] 2996 [Full Name: Thomas Hardy] Dec 2001 Tacitus on Germany, Translated by Thomas Gordon [tctgrxxx.xxx] 2995 Dec 2001 A Spirit in Prison, by Robert Hichens [sprsnxxx.xxx] 2994 Dec 2001 Samuel Butler: A Sketch, by Henry Festing Jones [sambtxxx.xxx] 2993 Dec 2001 The Middle Class Gentleman, by Moliere [#3][mgentxxx.xxx] 2992 [Translated by Philip Dwight Jones, also available as mgent10h.htm] Dec 2001 Francis Drake's Voyage Round the World, by Pretty [fdvrwxxx.xxx] 2991 [Title: Sir Francis Drake's Famous Voyage Round the World, by Francis Pretty] Dec 2001 NEVER AGAIN! by Edward Carpenter [neverxxx.xxx] 2990 Dec 2001 Garrison's Finish, by W.
